|
Common Myths - Do you find the term Plastic Surgery a bit puzzling? It doesn't have to be. It is derived from the greek term "Plastikos", meaning "To change shape, or mould", just like plastic products can be moulded into various shapes. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a specialised type of surgery which aims to change the shape of any part of your body. This may be for cosmetic reasons, functional reasons or a blend of both. Plastic surgery may be performed to enhance an area which has never been ideal, or to restore or rejuvenate an area which has become less ideal with aging, sun damage, cancer or injury. Plastic surgery is not just a handful of fancy tricks to make you look better. It is a broad set of principles, skills and techniques, combined with the judgement and experience to apply them wisely. This is why you need to be careful not to be blinded by gimmicky advertising, and unrealistic promises. It is wise to check if the Surgeon you are consulting is accredited in the specialty of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at one or more of the major hospitals in town, and be sure he or she is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
