Blepharoplasty literally means eyelid shaping, and aims to correct the common problems of excessive skin, wrinkles and bulges in the eyelids. All of these problems can cause you to look tired, sad or aged. In some people, the excess skin folds on the upper lids can even restrict their vision. There are some circumstances where these changes may be sufficient to attract a Medicare and health fund rebate for the surgery. Correction of these changes can help you to look and feel fresher and less tired. What is involved? Eyelid correction may involve one or a combination of skin removal, fat removal, lid tightening, and Laser resurfacing. The best approach for your situation can be discussed in detail at your consultation. This type of surgery is usually done under local anaesthetic or twilight sedation, but can be done under general anaesthetic if you prefer. It is typically a day surgery procedure. There will usually be a degree of swelling and bruising for the first week or so. These can both be minimised by applying cold compresses to the eyes postoperatively, and keeping the head well elevated.
